Protect your PDF with a password online. Add a password, secure your files and download the locked copy in seconds. Free.
Payslips, contracts, medical reports, tax forms: plenty of PDFs are not meant for just anyone. Locking a file with a password means only people who know it can open it, even if the document ends up in the wrong inbox or on a shared drive. This tool adds that protection online, without software to install and without creating an account.
Your PDF is encrypted with AES-256 by default, the same standard used by modern PDF readers. If you need to open the file on a very old viewer, you can switch to AES-128 for wider compatibility. The locked file is a normal PDF and opens in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Safari, Preview and most mobile apps.
The password you set is the key to open the document. On top of that you can switch off printing, copying or editing. Keep in mind that these permissions are respected by PDF readers rather than enforced by magic, so treat the open password as your real protection and the permissions as a polite request.
Use a short phrase rather than a single word, for example four unrelated words in a row. Share the password through a different channel than the file, such as a phone call or a message app, and never inside the same email. If you forget it, nobody can recover it for you, so store it somewhere safe.
Your file is processed on our server only for the few seconds the encryption takes and is then deleted. We do not read, keep or share it. For extra safety, make sure this page is served over HTTPS.
